Lets talk Korean Toners!

Turns out, Korean toners are vastly different in terms of ingredients and function than the Western style toners that I grew up with. I cringe at the memory of applying drying astringent alcohol-based toners that stung my skin when I was a teen.

In Korean skincare, hydrating toners are used instead of astringent ones. The toner step comes directly after cleansing, both morning and evening (or anytime you wash your face really). The basic function of a Korean toner is to reintroduce hydration into the skin that may have been stripped in the cleansing process. Hydrated skin absorbs products better and will help the skincare steps that follow (essence, serums, facial oils, creams) penetrate into your skin better.

Although most Korean toners are hydrating, there are some acid toners with AHAs or BHAs that provide light exfoliation. Most of those who use acid based exfoliating toners will also follow up with a hydrating toner.

If you’re reading this you’ve probably noticed that there are many different Korean toners out there. Don’t let that put you off! One of the best things about Korean toners is how many different varieties there are! They come formulated with different unique ingredients to support different skin goals. No matter your skin type or concern, there is a toner out there for you!

Here are some of our favourites:

A complexion boosting toner formulated with 72.6% black bee propolis extract and 10% honey extract to boost elasticity and promote healthy, glowing skin. Honey & propolis are well known for their anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. It has a vicious, non-sticky essence-like texture that absorbs quickly into the skin leaving your skin feeling smooth, hydrated and ready to enjoy the full benefits of the rest of your skincare routine.

Recommended for: All skin types. Improving elasticity in dry, dull and dehydrated skin as well as soothe sensitive and irritated skin.

A pH balancing and ultra-hydrating toner powered by organic Saharan Prickly Pear Cactus extract. Prickly Pear Cactus Extract is a powerful antioxidant with excellent moisturising properties. The toner also contains Rosa Centifolia and Crape Myrtle Extract, which helps to calms redness and smooth uneven texture.

Recommended for: All skin types including sensitive skin.

A cult favourite essence toner with an intensely hydrating formula that balances the skins pH and delivers nutrient-filled moisture to the skin. Formulated with 91.3% milk vetch root extract (Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract) that has powerful antioxidant, calming and anti-inflammatory properties. It has an essence like viscoicity and quickly absorbs into the skin.

A vegan certified hydrating toner formulated with green tea extract, triple hyaluronic acid and six types of peptides. The green tea moisturises and soothes the skin, while the hyaluronic acid hydrates and the peptides provide protection against environmental aggressors. It has a viscous texture that absorbs quickly into the skin.

Recommended for: Dry, Normal, Combination skin types including sensitive skin.

Applying your toner:

You can apply your toner by gently patting it into your skin with your palms or by wiping your skin with a cotton-soaked pad.

The 7 Skin Method:

The Koreans have a toner technique referred to as the 7 Skin Method. In Korean they use the same word for skin and toner. The 7 Skin Method involves applying several layers (7 to be exact) of a hydrating toner onto your skin for deep nourishment and glowing, plump skin. In practice, it doesn't have to be seven layers. Pat each layer into your skin until you feel your skin has drunk its full. Personally, 3-4 layers are often enough for me.

Remember to avoid any toners with acids and alcohol for this method. You may choose to layer the same toner or mix it up with different types. Apply it according to its consistency, with lightest consistency first and heaviest last.
