Double Cleansing 101

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

Double cleansing is a technique popular in Korean skincare that involves using two types of cleansers right after each other. It isn't necessarily for everyone, but it can be worth it! Let's dig deeper into understanding Double Cleansing and how you can add this step into your skincare regimen.

Double cleansing involves two steps;

Step 1 - Wash Away your day: Use an oil-based cleanser to dissolve away oil-based impurities such as makeup, sunscreen, and pollution. Not properly washing away airborne bacteria, pollution and makeup may contribute to premature aging, pigmentation, and breakouts. No thanks!

Step 2 - A deeper clean: Using a water-based cleanser (foaming or gel) to ensure that the remaining impurities are removed. Once the makeup, sunscreen, and surface grime have been removed the second cleanse will clean much deeper into the pores to remove impurities.

Why double cleanse?

Double cleansing is a gentle way of ensuring that everything from the day is removed and cleared away for a more thorough cleanse. Properly cleansed skin also means that your skincare products can properly penetrate into your skin and do their thing! Double Cleansing will brighten dullness and contribute to a plumper and more youthful complexion.

Who should double cleanse?

Double cleansing works on all skin types - from oily to sensitive. It's especially important to double cleanse if you live in a city and are exposed to a high level of pollution or if you wear transfer-resistant makeup and mineral-based sunscreen.

It also helps if you have oily skin and find that one cleanse with your regular cleanser just isn't removing enough excess oil but that if you use a stronger cleanser your skin feels tight and dry. It is better to use two gentle cleansers than one harsh one.

How often should one double cleanse?

It's not necessary to double cleanse twice a day. Skip the double cleansing in the morning and incorporate it into your nighttime routine when you have makeup and sunscreen to remove. Use it some days, skip it others. Listen to your skin and do what works best for you!

How do I double cleanse?

Oil Cleanser: Choose your oil-based cleanser. Massage into your face and add water to let the oil cleanser form a milky emulsion. Rinse off the oil cleanser with lukewarm water.

Water-based Cleanser: Once the oil cleanser is rinsed off, massage your water-based cleanser into your damp face in circular motions for 60 seconds. Rinse off with lukewarm water and softly pat dry.

Add Huxley's cleansers into your skincare routine for a super gentle yet thorough double cleanse.
